ATC’s food handlers card courses are approved by hundreds of state and county health departments and regulatory agencies nationwide. All exams are ANSI accredited, as required by many jurisdictions. In Ohio, this is also considered the Level 1 food handler training.

Purpose

The purpose of the food handlers card training and exam is to prepare food handlers to enter the workforce by providing the required food safety information as specified by regulations of the workers’ state, county, or local government. Some states require just the training and other states require an actual certification. 

Scope

This training and test will prepare you to become a responsible food handler. A “food handler” is generally understood to be a food worker in a non-managerial role. Food handlers typically include bussers, servers, dishwashers, line-cooks, etc. 

By the end of the this course you will be able to:

• Identify which symptoms require staying home from work or reporting an illness or symptom to the manager.

• Describe how food can make people sick after being contaminated by physical, chemical, or biological hazards.

• Identify the time and temperature requirements for keeping food safe during specific stages in the flow of food.

• Identify what behaviors of food handlers directly affects the safety of food.

• How to keep hands and body clean to prevent contaminating food and food contact surfaces.

• Use appropriate barriers to prevent bare hand contact with food.

• Understand how to keep the workplace and equipment clean.

Candidates who have taken an accredited Food Handler Training or Education Program with ATC Food Safety must contact the training provider for instructions on how to obtain a replacement food handler card. For example, if you took a ServSafe Exam, you would need to contact ServSafe.com. If you took a Taps exam, you would need to contact taps. If you can log back into your account, you will always have access to a digital copy of your certificate or card. If you have any questions, ATC Food Safety is here to help. Are food handlers still required to have a local health jurisdiction card in addition to the card issued by the training providers? 2017-12-18T11:43:19+00:00

In some states, Food handlers may be required to obtain a local health jurisdiction’s food handler card. Please check the state specific food handler pages listed above for more information or Food handlers should contact the local health authority for specific requirements.

A food handler card issued by an accredited program will vary in size and color. However, all food handler cards issued are required to have the food handler program name, address and TXDSHS Accreditation License Number listed on the card. They will all have a registration with ANSI and may or include a logo from ANSI similar to this:

Yes, accredited training providers may offer training on the internet.

ATC Food Safety only offers food handler certifications from accredited food handler education or training programs such as ServSafe or Taps, when an accredited program is required by the state regulatory authority.

In short, it depends on our state. Some states require an accredited food handler card, some states have their own food handler card, and other states suggest having a food handler training. When applicable, it is the responsibility of the person in charge or the Certified Food Manager to ensure that all employees are properly trained in food safety as it relates to their assigned duties.
